There are many legends about the origin of tapas as a kitchen style:

Some say that a sickly king named Alphonso was forced to eat small bits and drink wine between his main meals,
so he could recover from his illness.   These so-called “snacks” have very soon enjoyed great popularity and became tradition in the royal courts.  Others say, that the first tapas have been served to cover alcoholic beverages such as wine,  e.g. with a slice of bread placed on top of a wine glass, to protect the precious drink from annoying flies. Overtime, these methods have become more and more inventive and fancy.

However, tapas is now a world-renowned cultural pastime, and nothing is more appealing than composing these small tasty dishes and drinking exquisite wine in cosy surroundings and pleasant company.
